Babylonian Night

Tuesday 6 January 2015
Breakthrough Events Team
I thought I'd update everyone on the event I helped put on in December!

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to help out with the Breakthrough Events team on an event in aid of Ambition. Ambition is a charity that works to improve young people's educational attainment, employability and health and wellbeing by developing confidence, life skills and resilience. With all of us ranging from the ages 19-35 it was easy for us to see the advantages that this charity can give to young people, which made it all the more important for us to put on a successful event.

I primarily worked on sponsorship, fundraising and marketing for the event. We set ourselves the target of raising £3000 for the charity, and had three weeks to do so! We started raising the money through our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram campaign - #youthfulyears

Here is the photo I chose!

We also managed to get an Ad in the Metro and Evening standard!!

We put on a pub quiz - this was great for raising awareness of the charity and getting lots of people together before the actual event.

All of this helped pave the way for donations, pushing us nearer the £3000 mark.

We chose the name Babylonian Night because it will be hosted at Gilgamesh in Camden, which already has great decor that our theme and design team have been able to make use of and incorporate into our Babylonian style.

We were keen to put forward something original and fun. So the name of the event and the decor  helped us massively with this, getting all those attending to experience the same thing and transporting them out of the cold English December and into a Babylonian Night.

We chose Gilgamesh in Camden as our venue. The venue was perfect for our event because of its decor. On top of this, Gilgamesh serve pan Asian style food which was in keeping with our Babylonian theme - we served canapés made by the chefs at Gilgamesh. The venue is also very well known and only a few minutes walk from Camden Town station and so was easy for guests to find, which was high on our list of priorities!

Here are some photos of Gilgamesh pre-event:

The room we used (The Studio) has a fantastic layout, which allowed us to keep entertainment a running focus throughout the night. Throughout the night we played Babylonian music and had an auction and raffle, with some great prizes (backstage passes to This Morning, a weekend stay in Cornwall and a night stay at the 4* Millennium Gloucester Hotel - to name a few!). We also had a belly dancer, a magician, make-up artists applying makeup to guests and a catwalk, with finalists from Britain's Next Top Model.

The main challenge we faced when organising this event was time. With three weeks to market the event it was been hard to secure people's availability for the event. Most people have their calendars booked up a month prior. This meant although a lot of people wanted to come they weren't able to.

However, we managed to raise a grand total of £4,135.00!! It was also one of the best experiences. Everyone working on the event was fabulous! Well done guys!!

Finally - here are some photos of the event in action!
